Herbal Viagra: Safe or Unsafe?

Herbal Viagra: Safe or Unsafe?

When you think of male erectile dysfunction, what word comes to mind? Viagra.  Viagra has become the definition of erectile treatment.  This has sparked the interest of many companies as they have seen a great money making avenue through the treatment of erectile dysfunction.  These days you can now find Herbal Viagra every where you go, and you may be wondered exactly what herbal Viagra is.

This questioned has many times been proposed by patients looking for treatment, and they often times wonder what it actually contains.  For the most part, herbal Viagra contains unnamed ingredients, but studies have shown that they contain Sildenafil.  Sildenafil is the active drug used in the original Viagra.

Section 98 of the Medicines act was revised in 2006, and was against the use of herbal medicines that actually contained active drugs used in manufactured medicines.  It included a list of all of the herbal drugs that contained some type of active prescription drug.

Due to severe and sometimes fatal reactions Viagra (Sildenafil) is never prescribed to patients who suffer from the following:

  • Heart Disease
  • Glaucoma
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Also, to patients who are taking nitrates

This could result in serious problems for those who in turn decide to take herbal varieties of these drugs that actually contain the active ingredients.

Through the result of investigations it was shown that many of the herbal supplements that are sold through herbal retailers were produced in China.  The products contain labels that are written in Chinese, thus making it hard for a large majority of people who speak English to understand exactly what it is that they are taking.  This reason alone makes it necessary for us to take precautions in knowing what it is that we are taking.  These five precautions can help you to determine whether or not the herbal medicine you are taking is safe:

  1. Red and Brown tablets in a zip lock bag that are labeled 800mg (no label on them)
  2. Bright Green pills in a zip lock with no name or label on them
  3. Red capsules in gold foil labeled Kang Da
  4. Orange and Black capsules in red transparent package
  5. Cream capsules in a Orange and Blue transparent package

The fact of the matter is that we as consumers must know the medicines that we are taking.  You do not want to spend your money on something that is meant to help, just to find out that it is only endangering your life.  The government is doing all that it can to help in protecting us, but it is our job as consumers to take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves as well.  Be a savvy consumer and learn the product that you are buying.
