Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is a pill produced by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, and it is the first non-surgical treatment approved to treat erectile dysfunction. It is the first drug approved that does not need to be either inserted or injected into the penis in order for a male to achieve and maintain an erection. The pill was introduced to the market with FDA approval in March of 1998.
Development History of Viagra
This drug was originally researched and developed by Pfizer as a means to help men who suffered from frequent chest pains. Used as a heart medicine this drug showed no successful results. In 1992 the research and development of sildenafil citrate came to a halt.
Later, information showed that sildenafil citrate showed some properties that could be used to help treat erectile dysfunction. Research then started again and it was tested to see if it would successfully treat men who suffered from ED. Pfizer wanted to see if it was successful in helping men achieve an erection and see if it allowed them to hold it long enough to engage in pleasurable sexual activity.
There were 21 random clinical studies that were conducted on patients worldwide. The clinical studies involved more than 3,700 patients that ranged in age form 19 to 87 years old. Some of the participants suffered from ED for various reasons including spinal cord injury, diabetes, prostate problems and surgery, and causes that were undetermined. Others suffered from ED due to illnesses like hypertension and even artery diseases.
The trials proved amazing results. The results were so amazing and the drug proved to be so effective that Viagra was approved for use on the market in a matter of six months.
There were no serious side effects or questions from using Viagra that outside experts were not even consulted.
