The development of Levitra stemmed from the need to challenge the drug that monopolized the industry. That drug was Viagra. Viagra was created and sold by Pfizer Pharmaceutical and for a while they made big profits by selling the only drug that treated male erectile dysfunction. There were billions made through the sale of Viagra, thus showing that there was a big market place for that type of treatment.
Levitra was developed by Bayer Pharmaceutical Corporation as a means to gain their share in the market of male erectile dysfunction. But, for Bayer to be able to compete with the Pfizer drug it had to have advantages over Pfizer’s Viagra. The advantage that Levitra had was the convenience that it had in taking the drug. Viagra needs to be taken with food, but Levitra on the other hand does not need to be taken with a meal.
Levitra has no distinct definition because it is simply a word created by Bayer. The reason for choosing Levitra is due to the fact that it is similar to the word levitate. Levitate means to rise up, thus Levitra was created because it allows the male penis to rise up. It has also been suggested that the word is derived from the French masculine pronoun “le” and the Latin word “vita” which means life. Thus it gives life to the male.
 Levitra has a lot of similarities to Viagra. They are both three syllable words that end in “ra.” In essence they do the same thing and thus they are also similar words.
Drugs have two separate names. There is the brand name (in this case Levitra) and the generic name (Vardenafil) that is assigned to a specific drug type.
The brand name is created due to the marketing efforts that are needed in drugs. The brand name makes the drug easy to pronounce for both physicians and for patients. Millions of dollars are spent in the marketing of a new drug by pharmaceutical companies. Thousands are spent in developing a brand name for a new drug and Levitra was created by the same company that created well known drugs like Lipitor, Allegra, and Celebrex.
