Cialis is a medication that is used to treat patients that suffer from male erectile dysfunction (ED).  It is the first oral medicine that has been proven to work for a period of 36 hours.  This is good because it allows the patient to choose the time that is appropriate for the patient and his partner to engage in sexual activity.  The active drug in Cialis is called Tadalafil, and it comes in two dosages (10mg and 20mg).  It also has been shown that men taking Cialis have seen an improvement in reaching erections when taking Cialis. 

An erection occurs when the arteries in the penis relax and widen, and blood is better able to flow.  The larger the amount of blood flow that reaches the penis the harder it becomes and the penis is better able to become erect.

When the penis is aroused by sexual stimulation it is done through the release of Nitric Oxide (NO).  The NO causes an enzyme called guanylate cyclase to produce cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). The cGMP is primarily responsible for increasing and decreasing the size of the blood vessels carrying blood to and from the penis, thus causing an erection to take place. If the cGMP is destroyed by another enzyme, phosphodiesterase-5, the blood vessels return to their normal size blood will then leave the penis and the erection will dissipate. Cialis prevents phosphodiesterase-5 from destroying cGMP so that cGMP will stay around for a longer period of time. When the cGMP is persistent it will lead to a more prolonged engagement of the penis with the blood.

Cialis should only be taken as directed.  It should be taken at least 20 minutes before engaging in sex and only taken every three days on an as need basis.  Cialis should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children and light and moisture.

It is important that you let your physician know all of the medications that you take.  Whether a medication is a prescribed medication or an over the counter it is imperative that you let your physician know exactly how you are medicating yourself.  This is especially important if you are taking nitrates or high blood pressure prescriptions.
