How does Cialis Work?

Cialis is a drug that has been approved by the FDA and licensed for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction.  Erectile dysfunction is simply the inability for the penis to stay hard long enough to engage in sexual activity.
Cialis is a very successful medication in treating male erectile dysfunction, and allows a smoother blood flow to the penis ending in a much firmer erection of the male penis.

Understanding Erections and Erectile Dysfunction

To gain a better understanding of how Cialis works it is best that one understands the aspects of how ancialis stimulation erection itself works.
When a man’s penis becomes sexually aroused signals are sent from the brain to the genital area.  These signals allow for chemicals to be released that help the muscles in the penis to relax.  As the muscles become relaxed more blood flow is able to reach the penis.  Once the blood reaches the genital area the penis becomes erect.  An erection dissipates when a chemical called PDE5 breaks down the chemical that allowed the muscles in the penis to relax to begin with.  This process allows the penis to constrict as blood begins to leave the genital area.
What Cialis does is block or inhibits the PDE5.  Once the PDE5 is inhibited it allows the chemicals that allow the erection to stay in place, thus inhibiting the muscles in the penis not to constrict.  All of this allows for blood to stay in the genital area and allows the male to maintain an erection.

Does Cialis Work Without Sexual Stimulation?

Cialis will not work in the absence of sexual stimulation.  The reason for this is because when there is no sexual stimulation involved the chemicals that are needed in order to cause an erection are not released to the genital area.  These chemicals only react when the male becomes sexually aroused.  Cialis does not effect the release of the chemicals needed it simply allows the chemicals to stay in the area longer.

How Long Does It Take for Cialis to Work?

Patients who consider using Cialis as a treatment for ED often times ask how long the medication will last.  If you take into account that all individuals vary in their reaction to a medication you will find that the medication lasts for different times in different people.  For the most part Cialis will be effective for a time period of 36 hours.
A recent clinical study showed the effects in the difference of people who actually were given Cialis and those that were given a sugar pill in its place.  The study showed the percentage of people who performed successfully in sexual intercourse for time periods of 24 and 35 hours.  The patients took different pills with some taking sugar pills, some taking a 10mg dose of Cialis, and the remainder taking a 20mg dose of Cialis.

The results of this study are shown below:

24 hours

  • 42 percent taking the sugar pill
  •  56 percent taking Cialis 10 mg
  • 67 percent taking Cialis 20 mg.

36 hours

  • 33 percent taking the sugar pill
  • 56 percent taking Cialis 10 mg
  • 62 percent taking Cialis 20 mg

Cialis successful erection

The time that it takes for Cialis to take effect in a patient will vary.  Studies have shown that Cialis can take effect in as little as thirty minutes, but for the most part it took about one hour for the drug to kick in.

Factors Affecting How Long Cialis Will Last

Numerous factors can increase and decrease the time period in which Cialis will stay effective.  Health factors like kidney and liver disease can have an effect on the amount of time that Cialis will stay effective in the body
