The history of Cialis

Cialis is a brand name of the drug Tadalafil.  It is used to treat male erectile dysfunction (ED).  Cialis is best known as a PDE5 inhibitor.  This causes blood flow to the genital region of a male to increase.  Cialis functions in the same way as its competitors Viagra and Levitra and is effective only with sexual stimulation to the genital area.  Just like its competitors, just taking Cialis will not cause a man to have an erection.

Cialis is the product of Lilly Pharmaceutical Company and a Washington State biotechnical firm called ICOS. ICOS began research for an ED treatment in 1993.  They began to research IC351 which is a compound that helps to inhibit the PDE5 enzyme.  In 1994 ICOS patented IC351.  In 1995 clinical trials began to study treatment of male erectile dysfunction.

In 1997 ICOS began to conduct studies on patients who suffered from erectile dysfunction.  By 1998, ICOS and Lilly Pharmaceutical formed a partnership with a goal to market the drug for use in patients who suffer from male erectile dysfunction.  By 1999 the third phase of studies began on IC351 the compound that is used as a PDE5 inhibitor.

Although there was a formation of a partnership to market the drug in 1998 there was no formal application filed with the Food and Drug Administration until 2001.  In 2001 the medication was then given the name Cialis.

By 2002 the FDA reviewed and rejected the application for Cialis.  The reason was due to the fact thatCialis and FDA the FDA wanted to see more clinical studies conducted on the drug, and they also wanted to get a more in depth labeling of Cialis.

By May of 2002 the third phase of the studies were finished and the results were in.  The results showed that not only was Cialis effective, but it was more effective than Viagra because it allowed for a 36 hour time period in order to receive an erection and perform sexually.

By July of 2002 the drug was recommended for approval in the European market, and by November of that year the drug was approved for European use.  By early 2003 the marketing of Cialis began in Europe.  By November of 2003 Cialis was approved for market sales in the United States.
